Sorrel Restaurant

In the world of top end dining Steve Drake has been a Michelin starred chef for 14 years. He began his career working at the Ritz aged 17.  He worked for some famous chefs like Marco Pierre White. After running his own restaurant, Drakes in Ripley he started on a new adventure in 2017, launching his restaurant Sorrel in Dorking. It is named after one of his favourite ingredients. 

I visited there recently and met Steve who showed me around the kitchen and introduced me to his staff. The kitchen has a modern feel, which is glass walled but the restaurant itself is a Grade II listed building which has been beautifully restored.  The guests have a fantastic view of the kitchen and the processes involved in producing Steve’s dishes which take time and great skill.

I had the nine course Discovery tasting menu. Some of the memorable items were:

Scallops, smoked cauliflower, curried oat granola and cucumber ketchup
Brill, Lollo Rosso, seaweed, turnip, oyster and lemon thyme
Venison, bitter orange, Earl Grey, kalamata olive and broccoli

 

It was a delightful dining experience and Steve was delightful to meet. I would highly recommend it.
