Salzburg

I’ve just returned from a weekend break in Salzburg.  It is an Austrian city on the German border close to Bavaria.

Salzburg is most famous for being the birth place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the setting for the film The Sound of Music.  The von Trapp family lived in Salzburg and the film is based on their true story.

The city is divided by the Salzach River with the mediaeval baroque buildings of the pedestrianised Alstadt Old City on its left bank facing the 19th Century new city on its right.

Hohensalzburg is a fortress that sits atop the Monchesberg mountain with fantastic views over the city.

There are a lot of great wine bars and taverns and it has one of the country’s best breweries, the Stiegl Brauwelt.

St Peter’s is the oldest monastery in the Roman Catholic Church.  In 1996 the old town of Salzburg became a World Cultural Heritage site.  The cathedral is beautiful, the interior dates mostly from the 17th Century.

Getreidegasse is Salzburg’s famous shopping street and one of the first things you see are the wrought iron guild signs that hang above the shops.  No. 9 is Mozart’s birthplace and a fascinating look at his early life.

One of the restaurants that I ate in is Esszimmer.  It is a wonderful experience with Michelin starred chef Andreas Kaiblinger who I met.  He and his wife run the restaurant and their passion for their food is something else.

Zum Zirkelwirt is another very good local restaurant in the old city with great atmosphere and ambience.  The food is full of typical Austrian flavours.

I also went to the famous Stiftskeller in the baroque hall which is the oldest restaurant in Europe, dating back to 803.  I went to the Mozart evening concert with a candlelight dinner, musicians and operatic singers performing arias from Mozart’s best known operas.

I would so recommend this for a weekend break.  A beautiful city and everything in walking distance.
