Over the Easter weekend I went to the New Forest and stayed at the Mill at Gordleton, near Lymington.
The Mill is a small hotel with only 8 bedrooms, a cosy bar and a great restaurant serving delicious home made and locally sourced food.
The grounds are big and very beautifully laid out. The stream runs through the middle and all around the gardens the owners have placed sculptures commissioned from local artists.
One of the more famous sculptors being Michael Turner, who works mainly in stainless steel. He started with small pieces, like the ones that can be seen on the dining tables in the restaurant. They are fish sculptures made from reconstituted household items like cutlery and stainless steel sieves and are very eye catching. I believe he now works on large commissions such as full size horses, reptiles and other pieces.
In the Mill gardens he has a dragonfly, wasp, owl, a dragon’s head and a full sized robot. They are stunning.
The Mill is about 5 miles from Lymington, which is a Georgian town to the south of the New Forest. It is a well-known sailing port at the end of the Solent.
I would highly recommend The Mill.
