Recently I stayed at the Lords of the Manor hotel in Upper Slaughter, Gloucestershire. The perfect country house in the perfect location.
You start the evening in the bar with a drink and canapés, while choosing your menu. The Michelin starred restaurant is run by Matt Weedon.
For starters I had pigeon breast with caramelised onion and bittersweet veal jus. The main course was hay smoked loin of venison with braised red cabbage and baked beetroot, chestnut sauce and spiced chocolate jus. Dessert was blueberries with lemon.
Each dish was beautifully presented, there were so many flavours going on in each course it was an evening of fine food and wine.
After dinner I had the pleasure of talking to Matt Weedon and we discussed the work that goes into getting such tastes onto the plate. The man has so much passion for the food he creates.
I also visited Blenheim Palace, in Oxfordshire, where Winston Churchill was born in 1874. I was told by one of the staff that the Duke of Marlborough often walks his dog in the grounds and you occasionally see him. It is one of the most beautiful palaces I have ever visited, next to Versailles in France.
